This is a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! showing IMDB ratings for episodes of Top Gear UK beginning in 2002. The low points are "Best Of" shows and the peak is the Burma Special. I don't regard the series as following an upward trend, but the people who rate the episodes on IMDB must.

I'd rate the Vietnam Special over the Burma Special, but what do I know?

It's because over the years Top Gear began to appeal to more people than just petrolheads. Top Gear has become much more of a "car entertainment" show than a "car information" show.

Top Gear's demographic is much larger now than it was back in 2002.

It's interesting that what is considered the 'best' years by many Top Gear fans (which appears to be about episodes 60-110 on the graph) have started with lower ratings that then get better, while the 'where has the originality gone/why don't you do more proper car tests/nobody cares if a car can drive upside down in a Belfast sewer' era (episodes 110-160) starts stronger and trends downward.

And I'd rate the Polar Special over both of those.... so I know even less.

In fairness a couple of those downward-trending seasons are betrayed by low-ranking "best of" specials, like Kake said. But you do make a valid point

Polar, Vietnam, and Africa. All way better than Burma

And I'd put the Botswana over all, with the exception of Vietnam. Those two are tied. I must be slow.

Don't be so mature and clear-headed about it.

Well, if reality can only be observed by the observer, by what metric does anybody know anything?

Hell, I think they best episode that I have watched is episode 9 from series 10, the 24 hours endurance race in a BMW. It was a very genuine episode in my opinion.

I watched the Polar Special six times or so. Therefore, I only know one thing: Top Gear is slowly dying ever since Fifth Gear burned down the Cool Wall. After that the show was more about creating drama than entertaining and informing car nerds in a uniquely humerous way.

The last season still had highlights like the P1 review, but there was also the dreadful hatchback episode.

A big problem for Top Gear is also the competition from web content like for example the Drive network. They produce "cheap", so they don't need a huge audience - i.e. the whole family. Nevertheless, they are able to satisfy our jalopy needs with an astonishing quality nowadays. You don't need to fast forward a celebrity interview and endure 24 fake accidents in a bogus challenge to get a few chuckles and a well made review of a supercar anymore.

My favorites are always the cheap car challenges or when they are forced to create something. The motor home one gets my accolades specifically.

That was a good episode, but that's only because they couldn't enter a catamaran or train in the race.

I think the best episode was the one with the cheap porsche challenge. That is my favourite top gear segment of all time.
